5th Annual New York Region Youth Championship - Notice of Race

ELIGIBILITY: All Sunfish sailors 10 through 17 years of age on the race date. Membership in the USSCA is required for all skippers. Current membership cards must be displayed. Membership applications will be available at registration. If you are a member and do not have your membership card with you, you will be required to join the class. When the Sunfish Office confirms your active membership, your dues will be refunded by that office.

FORMAT: There will be three divisions; Midget doubles, 10 through 13 years of age; Junior doubles, 14 through 17 years of age, and Junior singles, 14 through 17 years of age. Doubles and singles will race on two separate courses. In doubles competition, both skipper and crew must be Juniors or Midgets.

RULES: Racing will be governed by the rules as defined in the RRS 2005-2008; the USSCA and the regatta sailing instructions.

REGISTRATION: 0830-0930

COMPETITORS' MEETING: 0945

RACES: The first race will commence at 1030. It is the intention of the Race Committee to break for lunch after two or three races. No race will begin after 1600.

ENTRY FEES: $35 for skippers and $10 for crews include Lunch, T-shirts and Awards. Class dues are additional.

TOW LINE: It is recommended that all boats carry a 30' tow line.

ELIYA notification of Spindrift Trophy Race change in date

Sailors of Eastern Long Island,

I just got notice that Orient Yacht Club has changed the date of the "Spindrift Trophy" night race that was scheduled for Saturday, July 16. It is now set for Saturday, July 23, 2005. They found that they had conflicts with other community and club events that necessitated this change to one week later. All other pertinent information regarding the events remain unchanged.

To all ELIYA member yacht clubs with US Sailing membership and a Junior sailing program

As you all know by now, ELIYA is hosting the Area B Eliminations for the Sears, Bemis and Smythe Junior Sailing Championships. To determine who represents ELIYA for the Bemis and Smythe, Devon Yacht Club is hosting our qualifier, thanks to Kevin Fallon. For the Sears, there is no qualifier scheduled.

The Sears is the triple-handed championship to be competed in Lightnings with spinnakers. If you have a team of 3 Junior sailors between 13-18 years old, who can competently handle a Lightning with spinnaker, and are committed to be available July 26-28, please contact Helen Horton at hhbreeze@optonline.net or (631) 779-3236, with their names by Wednesday, July 20th.

If there is more than one ELIYA team wishing to compete, collectively, the association will determine which one team represents ELIYA at the Sears Area B Eliminations at Orient Yacht Club July 26-28.

College Recruitment for Fordham University

Fellow and Gal Sunfish Sailors:

As many of you know, I started coaching the Fordham University Sailing Team five years ago when it returned to collegiate competition. Since I retired last year, it has become my full-time avocation. Each year, I have requested your assistance in identifying good students, who are also good sailors, who want to compete at the college level, and several of you have provided promising leads. The first one was for a young lady, Rachel Daugherty, from Little Rock, Arkansas in the spring of 2001. Rachel visited NYC and Fordham in her senior year; fell in love with both, and graduated from Fordham last Saturday with a 3.3 GPA and a double major in Anthopology and Spanish Literature. She sailed for Fordham for four years and was the low point skipper in 2003, when we won our first regatta and again last fall, when we co-hosted with Columbia the 1st Annual Lady Rams / Lady Lions Big Apple Classic. She also served as Team Captain and as Undergraduate North Region Representative to the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association. All this from one posting on the Sunfish Message Board.

In June 2003, SAILING WORLD selected Fordham as it's first "Up and Coming Program" for the year. The editors were prescient because thereafter Fordham won the MAISA Club Teams' Championship and the Greater New York Area Dinghy Championship while our women's team took 2nd place at the Sugar Bowl Regatta. Our application for varsity status has been submitted to the administration and is under consideration. Our ranking in the 42 school MAISA conference has gone from 26-20-17-12-13 and at this spring's championship regatta for the America Trophy, Fordham finished 11th. Our goal for the fall is to crack the Top 10 in our conference for the first time, and our Five Year Plan is to be ranked among the Top 20 nationally. We can only do this by attracting very experienced sailors, who are committed to succeed on-the-water as well as in the classroom.

Fordham University is in New York City. Our beautiful Rose Hill campus in the Bronx is 10 minutes from our home port at Morris Yacht and Beach Club on City Island, overlooking Eastchester Bay and Long Island Sound. The combination of attaining an excellent education at the Jesuit University in NYC, the best college town in the country, and sailing at a sensational sailing site only seven miles from campus is tough to beat. We have a fleet of nine, soon to be 12, 420s and a very active 138 member Afterguard, our Alumni-Parents-Friends of Fordham Sailing support group, that just completed Phase I of a two phase effort to finance a $1 million Sailing Endowment.

Notice Of Race

Dates:

Rules:
These events will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008, applicable One Design rules, the USSA prescriptions and the Sailing Instructions.

Entry:
The events are open to all yachts who have a PHRF certificate. PBSA members receive entry as a membership benefit. Non PBSA members can enter by paying a $10 entry fee. No pre-registration is necessary. In order to have timely results the race committee will use any information available to score any boat for which the race committee does not have a PHRF certificate. No redress will be granted to a participant who has not provided a PHRF Certificate before the race is scored. The onus is on each yacht to provide such. Any yacht which crosses the starting line at the time of a start will be considered racing and liable for the entry fee, if it applies, and for scoring in the series as per the scoring rules.

Location:
The three Sunday afternoon races will start in Cutchogue Harbor. The start area will be selected by the Race Committee to provide an upwind start. Entrants should look for the designated committee boat in leeward parts of the harbor. This could be, but isn’t limited to, C"1", the Wednesday PM starting Line, (S"1" and S"2"), or set marks off Robin’s Island or Nassau Point. Consult the PBSA Race Packet for potential start areas for specific wind conditions. The PBSA Race Committee will broadcast start locations on VHF Channel 72 one half hour prior to the start and when arriving on location. The Friday night race will start at the Wednesday night starting line.

Classes:
The scoring will divide participants into Cruising, Spinnaker and One Design Classes. The Sailing Instructions will indicate the starting sequence and order of starts as specified by the race committee.

Scoring:
PBSA Race Committee will employ a modified "Golf Handicapping" system for daily races. Time penalties will be applied for leading boats in the series. Please see the PBSA Race Packet for explanation of this scoring system. For the series, there will a minimum of three races finished for series scoring and the Low Point System as per RRS Appendix A -A4 will be used according to the rules outlined in the race packet. When conditions permit, the race committee may add races on the water by signaling such. The daily race results for any class for which additional races are sailed will be scored individually with "Golf adjustments" which would be different for each race. Each race will be scored for The New Suffolk Series. The daily placements will use RRS Low Point Scoring of the multiple races.

Courses:
The Courses sailed are to be selected from the pre-published courses included in the PBSA Racing Packet; or, courses designated by the Race Committee Boat or Auxiliary Race Committee Boat.

Sailing Instructions:
SI’s are included in the PBSA Racing Packet, available at New Suffolk Shipyard and may be posted on the PBSA Web site (www.pbsa.net). Due to the uncertainty of staffing Race Committee, entrants should not assume SI’s will be available on the water.

Prizes:
Awards will be given for the daily finishes for each race day and for the series. The depth of the awards is solely at the discretion of the Race Committee Chairman. The awards will be distributed at the PBSA Fall Dinner.

2005 May Cup - Notice of Regatta May 4, 11, 18, 25

Rules:
The U.S. Sailing Association's Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008 edition will govern this regatta.

Eligibility
Breakwater Yacht Club members in good standing having paid the entry fee of 30.00 and signed the captains waiver, and provided proof of insurance are eligible. ELISA PHRF 2005 certificates must be submitted before 5/25/05 in order for a boat to be scored. Visiting yachts may enter at a cost of $10.00 per individual race. They must provide proof of insurance and hold a valid PHRF certificate or be a stock (non-customized) boat with an easily obtainable rating. Visiting yacht entries must be submitted by 5 PM on the day of the race that vessel plans to sail.

Divisions:
Division splits to be announced based on entries. Non- Spinnaker divisions only.

Registration:
Must be completed in advance on the attached form and submitted with the proper fee, ELISA PHRF 2005 certificate and insurance form. Yachts planning to sail one night only must declare their intention to race at the BYC before 5 pm. that evening to avoid confusion, no entry or declaration will be accepted by the R.C. boat
No boat will be scored with out a valid paid entry in hand prior to the race your time will not be taken there will be no retroactive scoring.
Entry is good for the yacht named on the entry only -no substitutions allowed. Entries can be mailed to Carol Morse 421 North Main Street Southampton, N.Y. 11968

Measurement:
A valid ELISA PHRF 2005 certificate must be submitted

Courses:
All races will be run in Shelter Island Sound. A course sheet and race instructions will be handed out prior to the first race although a course board on the committee boat may be utilized.

Start
The first gun will be sounded at 6:00 PM local time in the area west of Majors Cove in Shelter Island Sound.

Scoring:
The low point scoring system (U.S. Sailing rules Appendix A) will be used. One throw out will be used.

Prizes for 1st 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded in both divisions

U.S. Youth Sailing Championship: Applications Accepted

The 2005 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship will be held June 23-30 at Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport, CT. Applications for the Championship are now accepted for all three classes (Laser, Laser Radial, and Club 420) through April 1 until midnight, Eastern. Applicants must be between 13 and 19 years old this calendar year and will be asked to provide results from a list of major regional and national regattas. Applicants who have competed in any of these events are asked to report their finish in each regatta. Charters will be awarded on the basis of date of application and travel distance from the event. Senior Olympic Regatta 2005

A Senior Olympic Regatta will be hosted by Fairhope Yacht Club, Fairhope, Alabama, in late October 2005. This regatta will be the first ever Senior Olympic sailing event and will be conducted under the authority of the National Senior Games Association and the Mobile Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau.

This regatta is open to all non-professional sailors of at least 50 years of age (the skipper must be at least 50, and the average age of skipper plus all crew must be at least 50). The focus of the event is racing one-design sailboats and there are no prerequisite qualifications other than age. This is a bring your own boat regatta encompassing seven races.

As members of Fairhope Yacht Club's Senior Regatta committee, my wife and I are trying to develop a list of interested individuals, yacht clubs, fleets, classes, or sailing associations which would like to receive more detailed official printed information regarding this unique sailing event. The World's Longest Sunfish Race

Fellow and Gal Sunfishers:

When putting together your summer racing plans, please note that the 35th Annual World's Longest Sunfish Race, Around Shelter Island, NY, hosted by Southold Yacht Club, will take place on Saturday, July 16. We had hoped to welcome and honor our first two octogenarians to race; 80 year old, three time winner, Dick Heinl, and 81 year old, Keith Lyman, who won The Race in 2003. Keith missed it last year when he turned 80 because he and his bride, Eleanor, were in the midst of a one month auto vacation to and from Alaska. Keith is currently battling acute leukemia. I spoke with him this morning and he anticipates receiving a third series of chemo treatments starting in March. I assured him that if he doesn't race, a seat of honor will be his on one of the escort boats. I'm also trying to persuade Dick, who placed third in 2003, not to break his string of unbroken races, which now extends over a quarter of a century. Hopefully, he will be back to show us the way.

Hundreds of Sunfish sailors have earned their stripes in this nautical marathon. If you haven't yet participated, please plan on doing so. You won't regret it. In the meantime, please pray for Keith's recovery. In addition to being an excellent sailor, he is a super human being. We look forward to his return to the 'Fish.
